Some of M. Ward‘s music conjures sepia toned photographs, scratchy Victrola records and cold beer on ice in a galvanized bucket. At least for me (check out the second song to hear what I mean). Since I have no beer on ice, I’ll settle for a cup of strong, black coffee.

And from one of his early albums, one of my faves:

Coffee Break No. 5 – In the Right Place

A little pick-me-up for all y’all. I hope you find it as apropos of what you’re doing on this day as I do of what I’m doing. If you’re feeling a little low, bust out the pen and paper, the word processor, the typewriter or the clay tablets and get some words, any words, down. You’ll be glad you did.

There are thousands of songs out there, but here are a few of my faves. Feel free to chip in in the comments with your own.

Hamlet – The Band – Ophelia

Animal Farm – Pink Floyd Animals

The Grapes of Wrath – Bruce Springsteen – The Ghost of Tom Joad

The Story of Ulysses – Cream – Tales of Brave Ulysses

Coffee Break No. 2

Been listening to Bonnie Prince Billy while writing lately, courtesy of my brother. Turn the lights down and the hi-fi up. Sip your java and just listen.

And just to show that Bonnie Prince Billy has an upbeat side:

For what it’s worth, this guy (real name Will Oldham) played a young preacher in John Sayles’ movie Matewan, a story about the events leading up to the Matewan Massacre and the Battle of Blair Mountain during the period where miners were organizing in the West Virginia coalfields. Great flick.

Been writing? Grab a cup of coffee and take a little break.

Sit back and listen to the music. Enjoy little shot of inspirado.

You deserve it.

Mmmm. I believe I’ll have another cup.
